Catching Up On Prepping

After six or eight solid months of a crazy hectic schedule at work I’m finally back to concentrate on prepping and writing more about prepping. There are times in everyone’s lives when they get wrapped up in one issue or another and prepping or other hobbies have to take a backseat. I’m finally getting some free time back and hope to use it wisely to catch up on my preps.

Luckily I wasn’t so busy with work that I didn’t have to forgo all of my prepping but things certainly did get a bit “unorganized”. For example, I kept up with my food storage and have continued to make sure I have plenty of food in case of emergency. However I have not done a good job of cataloguing what I have including expiration dates and nutritional content. Thoreau has put out a ton of information on food storage relating directly to nutritional content over the last six months or so and I have not been able to take advantage of as much of it as I would have liked.

So while I’m pretty happy with the total amount of food I have I really need to pull everything out and make sure that I have the proper balance of protein, carbs, fats, et cetera… It’s really critical to have all of this information so that moving forward I can bolster my stores in the correct ways. I’m also getting much more interested in freeze-dried foods and plan to move more in that direction as I rotate out some of the foods I currently have that may be getting close to their expiration dates.

I’ve also managed to keep up somewhat with general supplies by shopping online in the evening and have added some interesting new products to my Preps but I don’t feel I’ve spent the time to practice using some of them as much as I should have. Having a piece of gear is one thing, knowing how to use it effectively is another so I’ve got some catching up to do. Still, I have found some cool new stuff and will post some links for everyone to check out later this week.

I’ve also added a couple new firearms to my collection, both .22 pistols. A Ruger LCR .22 and a Walther P22. I’ll be writing reviews on both of them with more details but let me say that generally I’m very happy with both of them.

Of course I haven’t been to the gun range as much as I’m used to but oddly I think this may have worked in my favor in at least one way. I’m referring to the ammo shortage we’ve all been experiencing. I’ve been too busy to get to the range more than a few times since last summer but I’ve slowly kept up on my ammo purchases. Since I haven’t been shooting that much I haven’t been as annoyed as I otherwise might have been about long waiting periods for ammo to arrive or being limited to buying only a couple of boxes at a time. Over the next month or so I will be re-organizing my gun safe, inventorying my ammo, and hitting the range with a professional instructor to sharpen up my skills.

I also moved into a new house right about the time things got crazy for me at work so I have been unable to complete some of the basic security measures I was hoping to put in place for my new residence. Now that Spring is coming I plan on putting in some new hedges and extra lighting for security as well as looking at some of the new window films that are available, and an upgraded security system. Solar upgrades are on my list as well.

So I’ve got lots to do and lots to write about. I’ll keep you all updated on how things go and hopefully we’ll all learn a lot together.
