Butch here reporting from the Bay Area of California where we were awakened last night at 3:22am by a strong earthquake. I live about 40 miles away from the epicenter but was still jolted out of bed by pretty violent shaking that then turned into a rolling motion that moved the whole house. Of course I tend to be a little groggy at 3am but nothing wakes you up faster than the realization that a sizable earthquake has just struck and the fear that it may get bigger as the seconds tick by.
It was actually pretty scary. I remember a lot of shaking and a lot of screaming (most of it girlish and coming from me). One of my trusty guard dogs immediately bolted out of the bedroom and headed for the front door. I’ll never be sure if he was protecting the property or abandoning ship. I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt and go with the former. The other dog merely raised her head off her doggie bed, looked around, and then went back to sleep. So much for animals predicting earthquakes. I myself hopped out of bed but by the time I reacted the quake was already weakening and it was clear that it wasn’t going to get any worse. The whole thing lasted maybe 15 seconds.
So now what do I do? I’m up, I’m a little shaken, so I guess I go inspect the property. First things first and that’s to check the gas line to make sure there’s no chance of a leak. In all seriousness if you think there’s even a chance that you could have a leak you should immediately turn off the gas to your house at the main valve. I have mine spray painted with some orange paint so it’s easy for anyone to locate. Fortunately everything seemed fine and I left it alone. A few items around the house were knocked over but no real damage done. Walking around outside I did notice that a bit of water had splashed out of the pool. That was a little scary. Not knowing what else to do I grabbed my trusty shotgun and fired a few rounds into the ground to show the earth I meant business and then I went back to bed. I’m not expecting any more trouble now that I’ve given the earth a taste of what will happen if it messes with my beauty sleep again but I will keep you all updated.
